A chartered Uruguayan Air Force airplane takes off from Montevideo carrying a team of rugby players from the Old Christians Club towards Santiago de Chile. Due to weather problems, the flight had to make an overnight delay in MendozaOct 12, 1972
The plane leaves once again towards Santiago de Chile. At 3:34 PM, the plane crashes into an unnamed peak.
In the crash 5 people lose their lives, 7 people are gone missing. A total of 33 remain Alive
During the night, an avalanche hits the fuselage killing 8 more survivors.Oct 29
Roberto Canessa, Nando Parrado and Antonio Vizintín decide to leave the crash site in search for help.Dec 12
Vizintín is sent back to the fusealge.Dec 12
After a long 10 day trek, Canessa and Parrado find a Chilean arriero named Sergio Catalán.
Because they cannot cross the river, they send a hand written note to Catalán, explaining who they are.
Canessa and Parrado are rescued and taken to Los Maitenes, where they are fed and allowed to rest.Dec 21
An expedition consisting of 2 helicopters leaves Santiago to Los Maitenes. There, Parrado is taken aboard to guide the rescue mission to the crash site.Dec 22
The remaining survivors are rescued from the crash site and taken by helicopter to the city of Santiago.Dec 23
Roberto starts playing rugby again. The first match is played with black armbands in memory of the deceased.Apr 1973
The story of what happened has been widely documented in several books and films,including the 16 survivors’ accounts given to British writer Piers Paul Read who wrote the best-selling book, “Alive” The Story of the Andes survivors”.1974

Becomes part of the first South American all-star rugby team, The South American Jaguar Rugby Union. They play in a South African tournament to fight against aparheid.1980
He graduates as a Medical Doctor from the University of the Republic of Uruguay.1981
Becomes a Pediatric Cardiologist. Later he would be recognised as a prominent Proffesional in his field, Director of the Cardiac Ultrasound Department and pre-natal diagnosis of Congenital Heart Diseases. He worked in the non-invasive evaluation of Heart Transplant Program and as investigator of Fetal Cardiology ant the Italian Hospital of Montevideo.1985
Awarded with the National Prize in Medicine.1986
Takes his family (his wife Laura and his 3 children: Hilario, Tino and Lala) to Los Maitenes, the place where he had arrived at after walking for 10 days through the Cordillera in 1972.1988

Based on the book Alive, (as well as other Hollywood and Disney productions), Film Director Frank Marshall made the homonymous film “ Alive” in 1992 in which Roberto is characterized by actor Josh Hamilton. Roberto, along with other survivors, gave assistance to the making of the film..1992
